Confidence High as Owls Prepare for Texas

As FAU prepares for its first real game since the New Orleans Bowl last Dec. 21, confidence is high that the Owls can go into Austin and give the Longhorns a tough game - not just on the scoreboard but in the trenches.

Coach Howard Schnellenberger is firm in his belief that the FAU defense, which often won the turnover battles last season, is even better and meaner in 2008.

Schnellenberger believes that a mean, tough defense can stifle a Texas offense that thrives on athleticism, not physicality. While it may be hard to fathom that a Sun Belt team is scheming to overpower a team from the BIG XII, that is the game plan Schnellenberger is sticking to - at least out loud.

"Once we step out on the field with Texas, the only ones who can help us is ourselves. Texas always has a very polished team that has great talent, but they aren’t tough, they aren’t a physically tough team."

FAU returns eight starters on defense, and Schnellenberger is counting on them as well as four experienced backups moving into starting roles to lay the wood on the Texas receivers.

"My defense will get to a point where they will be mean, nasty and ornery bastards and that’s what you need for Texas. Texas will move the ball with tit-for-tat, screens and options, but we’ll make them pay a price whenever they catch one of those dinky passes. We’ll put three hats on them and make them not want to get up, that’s the way to beat Texas."

Sounds like a plan to me.

Key to beating Texas is to keep our offense on the field. This means a big day from our backs is needed. We might have to blitz and gamble a bit more than we like, but I think it could pay off. We can only limit their offense by causing turnovers and getting to McCoy to disrupt their timing. If we go toe to toe, their size and depth will eventually wear us down. Just look at last years Florida game as an example. In that 3rd quarter, our O was on the field alot, and they were successful.

The key to beating Texas is to be a team aside from FAU. I take nothing away from that team, they are very good... but I think their coach just threw them under the bus. This is perfect bullitin board material for Texas. Especially seeing as how we will be breaking in a new DC that will be hungry for the physical aspects of the game.

Plus this years Texas team is better and more experienced than last years, and should cover the line on this game fairly easily. I wish FAU goodluck in their season, but you can go ahead and chalk up game 1 as a big loss.

I seem to remember Rudy Carpenter taking verbal shots at Texas' "toughness" last season right before the Horns beat down a very tough, and top 10 ranked, ASU team in the Holiday Bowl.

I also seem to remember that "polished" Texas D lighting Carpenter up almost every other play.

Anyone remember what Mangino's comments led to in 2005? 52-0 in the first half.

History rarely not bodes well for people who run their mouths about Texas right before they play.

Texas will beat the Owls... Soundly.

No Coach the last ten years has won more college football games than Mack Brown.....why? Because his teams aren't tough.

The secret to beating USC & Michigan & Oklahoma & Ohio State is to be a wuss.......

Howdy, Owls! A Longhorn fan here---I'm looking forward to FAU coming to visit. Those coming to Austin will find that Texas fans are pretty laid back, and rudeness to vistors is almost unheard of. It will also be the first game in the renovated stadium, with seating now at 95,000. As far as the game goes, everyone here is taking the Owl passing attack very seriously. Texas hired Muschamp from Auburn to fix the defense, so I think this first game will be quite a test for our very young and inexperienced DBs, despite their incredible athleticism. Our pass rush will be very good, though. The Longhorns will get their points, so it's imperative FAU score early, and like others have said, keep the Owl offense on the field. If FAU keeps it close into the fourth quarterr, ya never know! That said, Schnellenberger hadn't ought to get the Longhorns too riled up---they have a chip on their shoulder already...Hook 'em!

the Longhorns are doooomed. Our only hope is to keep it respectable.

The turning point in this game will be when FAU gets off the bus. Texas is superior in every way, but that's to be expected. FAU will fight, but it won't yeild too much. Texas is always a team that takes it one game at a time. They are focused and ready to hit someone besides themselves. Everyone has been doubting Texas all off season and the Owls will take the brunt of their frustrations. Howard should know better. Keep those comments in the locker room and off the internet. You're going to get someone hurt. Texas will win by 30+.

Wow. Rarely do I hear such amazing BB material come from the head coach... usually it is one of the dumber kids on the team that opens his mouth.

Talking trash against Texas always works. Good call Howard. Why don't you make a comment about Muschamp's mother as well? BOOMMF!

Ruby Soho said...

This was monumentally stupid. Remember what Yamamoto said about Pearl Harbor? Well Howard just went guaranteed that Texas won't be sleeping on FAU. Whenever anybody pops off about Texas like this, they inevitably get demolished. Ask Mark Mangino, Rudy Carpenter, Shaun Bell, Joel Klatt, Houston Nutt, Drew Tate, and dozens others. This happens every year and always laugh when I see it. I was somewhat worried about this game with FAU, until I saw this. Now I can rest easy.

You Texas fans better get over yourselves. Don't forget you almost let Arkansas State beat you in your opener last year. This will be your first game with all of your inexperienced players, while we have 17 starters returning. I can't wait to see your inexperienced secondary looking dazed and confused and your WRs getting blown up. Go OWLS!!

For the record, Schnellenberger told this to me, another reporter and a photographer in an interview set up with FAU Media Relations.

You're right. We did struggle against Arky State, and TCU, and UCF....

But the point is:
1) Your coach is an idiot.
2) Where does this confidence come from? Last I checked, you guys lost to that same Arky St team. You also lost to ULaMonroe, USF, Kentucky, and got blown out by the only Big 12 team you played - OSU.

Another longhorn...

Point is:

1. You're an idiot. We beat Ark. State. Before you trash talk, learn how to read or count.

2. Texas has no proven RB, 2 short "experienced" WRs, 2 undersized starting CBs, and a whole lot of DBs who probably don't even know how to line up yet.

Jay, you just went nationwide, buddy---congrats! The Longhorn Nation has been awakened---I'll bet the quote has already been posted in the UT locker room.

Last year's Longhorns were the worst team in a decade---and still finished #10 in the polls, blowing out mouthy ASU in their bowl game. This year's team will be MUCH better! FAU has nothing but a bunch of leftover 2* Hurricane rejects.

Loft said...

109th.

That would be the mighty Longhorns ranking in passing yards allowed last year. You guys all talk like you're LSU, coming off a dominating season, but the fact is you were incredibly inconsistent and very beatable.

FAU has nothing to lose, and Rusty Smith and the Owls offense will be testing that Pass D thoroughly.

Anonymous said...

You guys keep laughing it up about the Longhorns' lack of experience, but keep in mind that our practice squad would beat your starters.

Howie just did his team a terrible disservice by turning our normally laid-back crowd (against a team we're supposed to beat) into 90,000+ screaming for your completely overmatched team to be embarrassed.

You should have just come to Austin, hoped to not get anybody hurt, cashed the check for your AD, and gone home while hoping that no second-rate high school football players in Florida noticed the score...

Ruby Soho said...

The game with Arkansas St was closer than it should've been because they were smart and didn't talk trash. The Horns took them lightly and came out flat. This was FAU's best chance this year too, but Howard couldn't keep this to himself.

Rudy Carpenter talked trash before the Holiday and he ended up taking a beating so severe that he quit and took himself out of the game, his uniform in tatters.

Horn fans have seen this time and again; our team has a bad habit of taking others lightly and thinking they can coast to big win. But when something like this happens, the team comes out the way it always should and just destroys its opponent. Happens every time.

Anonymous said...

I can confirm that Schnellenberger's comments were discussed after Wednesday's Longhorn scrimmage. Howard the Duck is toast!

Anonymous said...

Texas fans are so stupid. You always boast about the Holiday Bowl victory. Don't forget ASU still scored 34 whopping points on your pathetic defense...a D with experienced starters. This time around, you don't have Jamail Charles to score for you. Half of your team is untested for this first game. Let's see what kind of an embarrassing mess those players will be in. Texas will be a force to reckon with 3 to 4 games into the season, but for the season opener, I seriously doubt it will remotely have it together.

Anonymous said...

We boast about consecutive Rose Bowl victories, too...and don't forget those four NCs and two Heismans. We're so much better defensively than last year it's not even funny. The third (soon to be second) all-time winningest program will come out so pumped, it'll be scary!

Anonymous said...

Great quotes. Austin here we come!

Anonymous said...

I wish coach Schnellenberger hadn't say those things in front of the media. As talented and experienced as this year's team is, I believe we still needed a "crouching tiger" approach to upset Texas in Austin. After this article, Texas will be on alert. I heard they are already not getting any respect from the mainstream media (e.g., ESPN, SI); now Texas will use our team as a punching bag to make a statement.

Anonymous said...

"Don't forget ASU still scored 34 whopping points on your pathetic defense...a D with experienced starters."

Texas was up 45-20 half way thru the 4th. 14 of those 34 points came in garbage time against the end of the bench. 7 of the 20 up to that time were the result of the GA touching a live ball. W/o that dude's stupidity Texas would have been up 28-0 minutes into the 2nd quarter.

The terrible pass defense last year at Texas cost the DC his position and Will Muschamp was brought in from Auburn.

You "heard" about Jordan Shipley's "durability? Seriously, what kinda of legitimacy is that supposed to be?

FYI Shipley played in all 13 games last season (started 7), and played in 13 games the year before (started 1).

Shipley missed out his RS frosh year due to injury, which required surgery.

Check your "facts"...

I've got a SUPER idea for all of you Owl fans... Why don't you just keep believing that this will be the same Texas team as last season? Not that the 2007 Longhorns wouldn't have pounded you too, because they would have...

There's a reason that abortion of a science experiment at DC, also known as McDuff/Akina, resulted in one getting fired, the other demoted, and Muschamp getting hired.

Even another 10 win season, and another top 10 ranking. does not forgive the worst defense Texas has fielded in 10 years (thank you Mackovic).

That's they way we roll over here in Texas. We expect more, and don't just accept that which others aspire to.

Don't let that one winning season as a Div 1-A football team go to your heads, gentlemen.

Anonymous said...

Well, if you're going to lose, might as well go down swinging. My first thought was maybe he's wanting to sell tickets, but since the game is in Austin it looks like he may simply be trying to keep his defense motivated for at least the first quarter.

Because high school football heroes are gods in this state, most horn players have lived a pampered, ego inflated life. They have an arrogance about them and really feel they have nothing to prove. This causes them to look “soft” because they are so full of themselves; they don’t really get motivated half the time. The one thing that does motivate them (any teen male really) is disrespect. Thanks owl coach. I look forward to seeing my team play with a chip on its shoulder.

Well, b 4 you insult me with not knowing the facts, I bet you can't even name more than 3 players on our team (before now). Of course you may come back and say "we are Texas, and we don't need to know about your sorry team."

And, I believe Shipley was injured 2 years in a row (may be not 3).

And why in the world do you Texas fans feel so COMPELLED to post on OUR blog anyway? Don't you have cattles to attend to?

Once again your Texas education has deprived you of any reading skills. If you're going to insult me with my own line, at least read it correctly first. I said "...we don't need to KNOW about your sorry team," not "WORRY." Apparently your state continues to lag behind in terms of reading skills. Honestly, I bet there are plenty of stupid Texans who can't even tell you exactly where Austin is, or where Florida is, or how many states are b/w Texas and Florida, etc.; the list can go on and on. Why don't you go Hook some education?

e.flow said...

Texas is one of the most overrated teams of all times. They have tradition. They have NCs. They consistently do "well." I give them all of those credentials. However, with almost unlimited resources and the talents that they have, they should be going to a BCS bowl every year, like Oklahoma, USC, Ohio State, and other storied programs. Instead, they end up playing runner-up teams like Iowa, ASU, Washington State, etc. After Vince Young, Texas is back to "Ooo...10 wins!"

Anonymous said...

Who did FAU beat last year? Who has FAU EVER beaten?

e.flow, has FAU ever beaten any of the teams you mentioned? I believe we beat USC, ou, and OSU all within the last three years. And ten wins means something for a Big 12 team---how did you do against Okie State? We haven't lost to them in over a decade. Anyway, it'll be fun for you in Austin and we welcome the Owl fans---but Schnellenberger is gonna have a rough go.

Well, you should be! Considered you played football longer than 112teams and you play teams like...well, FAU, Rice, Baylor, etc. You beat OU twice in over a decade. When you lose, they're blowouts.

At least our conference respects us. Texas was the laughing stock for the past 2 years, 109th D, getting beat by huge underdogs at home, etc.

e.flow said...

"Third winningest program of all time." You know, you can "just" win 8 games and become one of the winningest programs of all times...if you have close to 120 years to do it. Texas can no doubt win the "easy ones," but how have they fared against top 15 opponents thru-out their football history? That's what I'd like to know. You call FAU arrogant because we're on the rise? Weren't you Texas fans pretty humble until Vince Young came along?

Anonymous said...

Texas fans humble? Never. Why should we be? We've had our bad moments, but we still have a HUGE W-L ratio vs. our top two rivals, ou and A&M, and we're 7-1 against Nebraska in the last eight meetings. Who has a winning record against Texas? Not too many teams, and no one from the SEC, except SC (0-1). And we're 4-6 against ou the last decade, by the way.

Anonymous said...

"At least our conference respects us. Texas was the laughing stock for the past 2 years, 109th D, getting beat by huge underdogs at home, etc."

And what a conference you have! Bravo!

Texas finished right behind Oklahoma in the Big 12 last year, and we'd have made the Big 12 championship game instead of BlowU if Jamal Charles hadn't fumbled away a touchdown in Dallas.

"Weren't you Texas fans pretty humble until Vince Young came along?"

This shows what a short memory -- or what a limited knowledge -- you have in regard to college football. Ever heard of a guy named Darrel K Royal? He's a Hall of Fame football coach who won national championships at Texas. You can look for his name on that 98,000 capacity football stadium you walk into on August 30th.

Texas had some down years prior to Mack Brown's arrival, but it's been a little bit more than two years since Texas had a really bad year. We are the ONLY school in the NATION to post 10+ win seasons in each of the last seven years. So basically, ever since FAU had a football program, Texas has been winning 10+ games a season.

"Why don't you go Hook some education?"

Wow. FAU picks a verbal fight with Texas concerning a football game, and now FAU fans have to resort to talking about something unrelated to football just to have some ground to argue on.

Oh wait, FAU doesn't have any ground on which to stand against Texas educationally, either. We're consistently ranked as one of the best public schools in the entire nation. This year, Texas ranks as tied for the 44th best university in the country, and the 13th best public university in the country, according to the US News' annual rankings. FAU isn't even in the "first tier" of national universities (the top 112). Actually, FAU is listed as a fourth tier university.

All I have to say about FAU'S chances of winning the game against Texas is about the same odds that I have as becoming Michale Jordan. You FAU fans should tell your coach to shut the hell up and prepare himself to watch his team being carried off the field on the way to the hospital. Texas is faster and meaner than they were last year and I fell real sorry for the FAU players because your coach just singed your death warrants.

Like I said, you can win games and still be perceived as an underachiever. If you don't win the "big ones." I don't dispute that Texas won big games lately (Ohio State, USC, Michigan, OU), all while Vince Young was present. Post Young, you're on your way back to the middle of the pack.

You see you say that only recently we have had success but look back at our schools history and you will see a WINNING tradition which more than I can say for FAU which I would rank some where just below clown college
but thats ok because when game time rolls around and the game is far out of reach after the first half all your shit talking won't amount to much and the nation will see just how high of an education you get at FAU. But congrats on starting the new season 0-1 .

Texas in the Mack Brown era has faced around 40 ranked teams and their record is close to .500. Compare that to teams like Tennessee, Florida, OU and the other powerhouses who have faced over 60 ranked teams in the Mack Brown era and have a better winning percentage. Plus Texas has a .300 winning percentage versus top 10 teams in the Mack era. So as you can see Texas continues to talk smack about their program and routinely beats up on the patsy and falls to the "real teams" and even the not so real teams like KSU and A&M.

In contrast, Texas is struggling in its own conference. Nobody, however, ever said Sun Belt = Big 12! We cannot compare our conference opponents with Texas' conference opponents. However, you have tough games based on your abilities and we have our tough games based on our abilities. You want to talk inexperience? How much experience do your boys have coming into a stadium of 87,000 fans hating them. It's a 6pm kickoff and the fans will have been drinking at tailgates all day and plenty ready to make your team suffer through every snap. This team is rediculously talented, but you'd know that if you kept up with any recruiting. I probably wouldn't keep up with it either if my school was signing 2 star players. I think you should stand up for your school, but be realistic. You've got no shot in this game. I know for a fact that this is in the Texas locker room right now. False. TCU fans scattered throughout DKR last year were pretty happy with themselves for the first 30 minutes and into halftime of the game. They were being extremely obnoxious, but we just let them celebrate all they wanted to.

Then we came out in the second half and scored 31 unanswered points. I didn't see any Texas fan acting like "the most arrogant a-hole ever to walk the face of the earth."

What we do NOT appreciate is the coach of the team we scheduled to play the punching bag for our home opener talking about how Texas isn't a tough team, followed by some arrogant fans on this board talking about how "mediocre" Texas is -- a laughable claim -- and other such ridiculous smack-talking. When people come into our house throwing punches such as these, we sometimes tend to throw a few verbal jabs back. Can you blame us?

Again, thanks for guaranteeing that our players aren't going to come out flat in the first game of the year.

Here are just a few more of our previous home openers:

2006: Texas 56, North Texas 7
2005: Texas 60, Louisiana-Lafayette 3
2004: Texas 65, North Texas 0
2003: Texas 66, New Mexico State 7

2007 was more the exception than the rule. Good luck, Owls.

I remember Texas having to resort to some homecookin' officiating to make sure Arkansas State didn't embarass them last year. If Ark St. can nearly do it, FAU might actually complete it.

"Don't forget us ladies too, txleapd. =)"

Sorry about that... ;^)

"BTW, isn't it true Shipley never really "started?" Last year's "real" starters were Nathan Jones and Quan Cosby, correct? and occasionally Shipley?"

Shipley started in 7 games last season, and played in all 13.

"Well, b 4 you insult me with not knowing the facts, I bet you can't even name more than 3 players on our team (before now). Of course you may come back and say "we are Texas, and we don't need to know about your sorry team."

Sorry, but I've never really cared to familiarize myself with FAU football. I'm not going to say that your team is "sorry", just that I don't understand why some of you want to talk smack about Texas football at this point. You really haven't proven yourselves just yet.

"And, I believe Shipley was injured 2 years in a row (may be not 3)."

Shipley was recruited in 2004. He red shirted in 2005 (was injured). Played in 13 games (started 1) in 2006, and played in 13 games (started 7) in 2007. He did not play in the first 2 games of 2007 as a WR, but saw time in both of those games as a place holder, because of a minor injury. The injury was not serious enough for him not to play. The coaches just did not play him at WR as a precaution.

He is currently a RS Junior, and currently intends to apply for a medical RS for missing his frosh season due to injury.

Texas fans. I am starting to suspect some of these "Owls fans" are not really our fans at all. I believe they are tools who read the article in your local newspaper, the Austin Statesman, clicked on the link to this blog, and started to create even more havoc by posing as FAU trash-talking fans. Our coach's tough talk notwithstanding, we Owls know where we are in terms of the pecking order. Do we have a chance to beat Texas? Sure...even a 1% chance is a "chance." Do we respect Texas? Of course. I really think those "FAU fans" who made fun of Texas here either know nothing about college football or, like I said, non-FAU supporters just trying to start so sh**.

Anonymous said...

All the fans on both sides making generalization such as "Texas fans are some of the most arrogant a-holes...." are the same a-holes who generalizes all people and pigeonholed them into their screwed up perception and stereotypes. A-holes on both sides need to shut up and grow up! FAU! Good Luck! Anything can happen! That is why we play the game. I am sure Michigan Fans were just as confident. But one thing is for sure. And I am sure that everyone on both sides will agree that your coach did not do your team any favors. I hope FAU matures and grows into a powerhouse that beats up teams I really hate after OU: Florida, Miami and FSU. We are a young team. We are a proud team. I guarantee you a great time here in Austin and hopefully a great game. Welcome to those who are coming. Generally we are great fans and appreciate our opponent’s fans. Other than maybe Nebraska, their fans are one of the best, we appreciate our team, tradition, college football and all those come here to participate! Guy who made the comment above needs to get out a little more. We are confident! Thanks for waking us up. I was little worried about your team. I hope your team is able to provide a great game.

Schnell's got nothing to lose.

Love the fire in his belly.

Don't worry about the Bulletin Board Material, Texas will skip right past it and find themselves in a close game in the fourth.

Good Luck Owls. You just earned a fan.

I think that FAU will beat Texas. Oh sure, T-U might get riled up and pissy about the comments, maybe they'll beat FAU. But after the game, they'll proceed to get overconfident and full of themselves as they always do year in and year out...they haven't had a true leader since Vince Young.

Their D and O is about to get hammered. Schnellenberger isn't 5-0 all time in bowl games with a title for no reason.

About the class issue? Please, put that Boy Scout crap away.

Hey Buckeye, why don't you worry about what you're best at. Owning a weak ass conference and then getting it handed to you when you finally play a real team. The fact you think that FAU will beat Texas tells me that you don't know jack about football. Your team would lose 3 games in the Big 12. The Big 11 is a joke! How those sour grapes tasting after not winning a single big game in forever? Go worry about Youngstown St. and leave this to the people involved in this game...jackass!

Ruby Soho had Houston Nutt listed as a coach that Texas shup up. When was this? A Matt Jones fumble late is the only thing that kept Nutt from being 3 and 0 against the Horns.

I think you are right. Aggies, Sooner, Arkie fans would be the only ones that would complain about..."Texas fans are some of the most arrogant a-holes...." Go to an Ohio St board and ask them how they were received in Austin the year after the OSU President issued an apology regarding how UT fans were treated in Columbus.

I believe he was referencing all the smack from the Pigs that they would shut down UT's running game. UT ran for 260 yards in that game.

Ohio sucks a**. I've lived in Houston, Austin, Minneapolis, and Cleveland. Cleveland is consistently rated one of the sh*ttiest cities in America, while Houston and Austin have been rated some of the best lately. Cleveland, like the rest of Ohio, is gutter-trash. Almost half of its downtown is vacant business buildings, a true reflection of a dying town.

How did Ohio enter the picture here? Anyway, I'm going to this game and I can't thank coach Schnellenberger enough for hyping this up - otherwise it would have been a somewhat "boring" season opener for us. Can't wait to step inside our newly renovated stadium!

Get your tix to this game now Horns fans if you haven't already. Hook'em!

My bad from an earlier post. We'll have 98,000 at the game. Also, Ohio St. fans are the worst in the country by far. I was at the Texas vs. Ohio St game in Columbus. Several people tried to spit on me, and they pretty much spent most of the game cussing at me and my friends. You've never heard anything better than complete silence in "The Shoe" when Limas caught that pass. Hook'em!

So, Howie Smellinbourbon now says he never made the 'soft' comments, but Jay says he did. What does the other reporter and the photographer have to say about it? Coach is either a liar or a blowhard---which is it?

Okay, Horns fans and with apologies to Owl fans - yeah, I know it's ironic, if you like that kind of thing, but - how can I look in and find out what the FAU fans think about their coach's comments with so many of us engaging in trash talking on their site? I already know what most of us think.

So, c'mon, let's just observe and quit meddling. This will get settled on the field, as it should be. Can't wait for kickoff.

As a Texas fan, I will freely admit that I am anxious to see how our pass D shapes up. We've got a hell of a lot of talent back there, but its untested. For all of their problems in the last two years, striking people wasn't one of them, and neither was DB talent. Our problem was getting a pass rush out of our front 4 (scheme issue...the DL didn't push upfield). Our LBs weren't great either. We had a white goober with Merton Hanks' neck and a mullet, and a walking 15 yard personal foul machine starting for us last year. Neither of those two guys could cover a baby with a blanket. The result? Safeties played up and bit hard on fakes, and our undersized CBs were left on islands with no help up top. Our safeties this year will be young, but make no mistake, they are extremely fast and will knock the batshit out of you...especially Earl Thomas. Our CBs will be good. The LB talent level will be way, way better than its been in a long time, and if Muschamp can coach it up, our D has the potential to be pretty damn nasty.

Our return teams are decent, our FG kicker is clutch, we block a lot of punts, but our downfield kickoff and punt coverage has suuuuucked for a few years now.

Our offense is going to be stout. We have raked in a series of truly stellar OL classes over the last few years, and have a set of massive, very athletic linemen. Our best two backs are very quick, though not world-class sprinter fast like Charles. Cosby and Shipley are surehanded, and we have some disgusting talent waiting in the wings. There shouldn't be much of a dropoff at TE. Blaine Irby is the real deal.

FAU's only hope is to force 4-5 stupid turnovers, make stuff happen in the return game, and score on a couple deep balls over our frosh safeties...basically the equivalent of a runt kicking the playground bully in the junk and running away. It could happen, sure. However, there is a reason the spread is what it is. If we come out angry, y'all will get mudholed. If we come out flat, which we have been prone to do for the last two years, it will be close at halftime. We should still win by 21.

As for academics...just off the top of my head, Texas is in or near the top 10 in engineering, business, architecture, communications, and our law school is #15. We have a huge endowment. We have world class research facilities. We have a badass medical school system. I haven't taken the time to look up FAU, because there really isn't a point, other than to say Texas kicks all kinds of ass in just about every area you can think of. Hell yeah, we're proud of ourselves. We have ample reason to be.

Good luck, and see you in Austin.

Expecting to beat most teams doesn't make us arrogant. We're the third winningest team in college football history. Of course we expect to win. If you don't like it, pump some money into your program and get them up to our level and then we'll take you as a serious opponent. In the meantime, yes, we expect to walk right through you. It's not arrogance, it's common sense.

Oh well, here we go again. I, as most Texas alum will demonstrate, HAVE attained an OUTSTANDING education from one of the ELITE universities in the nation! (I DARE you to run spellcheck now) I am also an avid fan of football in general not just college, NFL, or International League. I have witnessed "firsthand" what happens when "someone" ANYONE takes it upon themselves to "mouth off" ,and as an ARMY vet, I too understand both sides in regards to their individual positions.
As history will show, when someone mouths off, (sometimes the bully but mostly the bullied), "fate" seems to somehow intervene and "shuts up" the mouthing party! The list goes on and on as more "pathetic" attempts at "machismo" gets another "embarrassed"!! In Desert Shield, Storm and in the current war it was Hussein! For all of you who just might have missed out on this story it didn't end well for the "mouthing" one! He didn't just get laughed at, roughed up, or even "wedgied". Mr. Hussein (spoken with a very loose tongue) was incarcerated and then killed! Another prime example is the Indianapolis Colts (my favorite NFL team) despite having the greatest talent on the field would always get beat by their foe, the "patri-NOTS" (yes i'm aware that the word should be spelled patriots.....before you run down to the FAU lirary to look it up in the dictionary)and this ALWAYS seem to happen right after (thinking what was that idiot's name.....hmmmm...ah yes, Vanderjagt (a kicker no less) would always stir the pot by stating how how THIS year we're going to tear up the pats, and EVERY YEAR (until he was cut loose) the pats used the gab of "ONE" individual as "fuel for the fire" and it would cost the team! The first year following Mr. Mouth's dismissal the Colts went on to win the superbowl (am sensing a pattern forming here)!!! Everyone keeps talking about Rudy C. last year but hey, it wasn't the Horns who did the "mouthing". Nor, for that matter, was it the SunDevils organization! It was the idiotic ramblings of "ONE" (there is that word again) individual causing the suffering of several others (the team)!! I am not saying that UT is going to come out and destroy the FAU team on opening day, but I AM saying that when you open "pandora's box" you had better "be prepared" for whatever comes!! Good Luck to you and yours and we truly do hope you have a great time at the game, just make sure the coach "Mr. Mouth" brings his insurance card with him to cover the damages as it is quite possible that his "mouth" has just written a check that his "body" can't cash!!!

Honestly I had never heard of FAU before this season. I can respect why FAU has such a chip on its shoulders. It must be tough being to the state of FL what the University of Houston is to the state of Texas.

I was at the game last year when Texas played Arkansas State or whatever 2nd rate podunk school Texas puts on its early schedule every year and right off the bat you could tell that half the Texas team was asleep. Arkansas State got really lucky on a number of plays that kept them close and Texas had a bunch of costly personal foul calls and kept shooting themselves in the foot. Complete lack of focus.

I was at the orange white scrimmage last week in Austin and I can gell you that your head coach made a HUGE mistake calling Texas out like he did. I must of heard his comment mentioned at least 20 times to the players during the scrimmage.

For those of us here in Austin that watch the daily news and read the local papers you can see that Mack Brown is very irritated by the constant request for a comment on what your coach said about his team. It's on all the talk radio shows as well. This very morning the local ESPN radio station was talking about what your coach said about the Texas team....again.

I have to agree with others on this board. Your best chance was to come into Austin and catch Texas asleep at the wheel. No way that is going to happen now.

Get ready for a beat down and for a normally very respectful Mack Brown to run up the score. Can you blame the guy? He has been hearing it non stop for 2 weeks now.

Who did FAU ever beat? I believe in 2004 they were the only team to beat Hawaii, and they were in the running for top 25 that season, and they've only become better than that. Playing Florida last year, they had their arms wrapped around Tebow's neck 10 yards behind the line twice. Being to arrogant to lose 10 yards and his beloved trophy he "deserved so much", he grounded the ball, not once, but twice. It will be a good game, and I'm not even an FAU fan.
